We have entered a cold season once again here in Manitoba. It is something that we go through every year. 8 months of cold and 4 months of warm. We choose to live here and endure. In and out of season we trudge through. Somehow every year our bodies adjust to the climate as it changes. From snow to sunshine to hot to cool to cold. It’s a blessing that it happens gradually!
If you have ever lived where I do then you’ll know what I’m talking about when I say that -15℃ feels actually nice in January but feels horribly cold in October. Our bodies somehow adjust… climatize.
It is an interesting thing that not only our bodies become climatized but I think our souls to can become climatized also. Does it bother you that our generation is so lenient towards so much? Does it hurt your soul to know that a majority of the world hasn't heard that Jesus loves them and died for them?!
Over the past year at my church, some neighbourhood girls ages 9-15 have been coming weekly to our prayer meeting night. As I was talking to one I found out she had never heard about the simple, yet powerful, story of Jesus?! That Jesus died and rose again. That Jesus loves her and formed her in her mother's womb.
It was such a joy telling her about some of that and seeing her eyes light up. She softly repeated what I had just told her about Jesus creating her beautiful green eyes and her bright smile, I loved seeing her understand what I was saying. Her heart was so soft to what I was saying. I haven’t seen her since, and I don’t know how much of what I said actually stuck and played a part in how she lives, but even for me that was a very good lesson.
For myself the reason working with kids is worth it is because of moments like those. It teaches me that my heart needs to become like a child's. Soft, and full of wonder and rediscovery. Being able to weep at the beauty of Jesus and bride is a humbling but powerful thing. Not hardening our hearts to the gospel. Yes, we have heard it many times probably but it is still a very precious reality that we need to take to heart. It is a very evil, cruel, cold world out there. Let not our hearts be climatized to the temperature of this world!
